From The Couch – Trump, Carolla Shine at Republican Midterm Convention

Did you watch the NFL last night, the Republican Midterm Convention, something else, or nothing? I had no interest in watching the Super Bowl rematch between the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks, so I opted to watch President Trump and a few other speakers at the Convention, which was much more like a rally than a traditional political party convention atmosphere. Trump was in his element, cracking jokes, making news, and I’m sure making his enemies’ heads explode. The major news of the night was Trump’s announcement that the Republican party would pass legislation to give a $5,000 dividend to every adult American citizen should the Republicans win both houses of Congress this fall.

JM: I am not really a fan of this. Sure, I wouldn’t mind having an extra $5,000 in my bank account, but this is simply a political ploy to try and buy votes. The Republicans already hold both houses of Congress, so why don’ they do it NOW? Well, obviously because they want to get out the vote this fall. Honestly, this wasn’t a surprise to me because it has been rumored they were going to do this since tariff money started coming in. But the deficit and national debt are so bad, why not use that money to help get the country out of debt? And what happens to inflation when every American suddenly has an extra five thousand dollars to spend? I have many questions. George W. Bush did something similar to this after he was elected in the year 2000. From what I remember, they presented it as a tax refund because the citizens were overtaxed and there was a surplus. I think the amount was a thousand dollars per person or something like that.

So I have doubts that this is the right thing to do, but like I said, I’m not going to turn it down if they want to give it to me.

JM: President Trump had plenty of great and funny moments and the crowd loved it. The ladies standing behind him laughed and laughed. The “Beat Meat” bit went even further…

JM: James Talarico wasn’t the only one that Trump picked on. He picked on fellow Republican Ken Paxton, who is running for Senate against Talarico….

JM: Only Trump could get away with saying stuff like this. We are living in interesting times. I’ve gotta admit though that I laughed out loud numerous times. Another guy that got me to laugh is Adam Carolla…

JM: Carolla’s complete speech is below. I particularly like the bit about the California beach signs.

JM: Wonder what Carolla’s buddy Jimmy Kimmel thought about his appearance? He probably didn’t like it very much.

JM: I found it interesting that Kansas City Chiefs owner Clark Hunt waited until now to break the news that the new football stadium will not carry over the “Arrowhead Stadium” name. I suppose I’m not surprised about this, but I thought they might keep the name. “The New Arrowhead Stadium,” or something like that. Guess not.

JM: A thousand dollar fine for buttering a bagel? Yikes.

JM: The Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers play tonight in Australia. Geez, the NFL is taking over almost every night of television now. I think it’s over-saturation, but they must be making a lot of cash doing it, or they wouldn’t do it! I’d rather have all of the games on Sundays and have the premier game on Monday night, but I’m “old school” like that.
