Actor Donald Gibb died on Tuesday at the age of 71. He had been battling throat cancer and suffered a heart attack a couple of weeks before his death. It’s funny how we know some actors by the famous character(s) they played and not by their real name. If you mention Donald Gibb to most people, they might not know who you were talking about, but if you referred to him as Ogre, most people would know exactly who you are talking about.
Born on August 4th, 1954, Gibb’s journey began in the world of collegiate football at the University of San Diego, where he excelled before discovering his passion for acting. He captured the hearts of audiences with his unforgettable portrayal of Ogre in the 1984 comedy classic Revenge of the Nerds.
In addition to his iconic role in Revenge of the Nerds, Gibb’s career spanned various television series and films, showcasing his remarkable versatility as an actor. His towering presence and unique charisma allowed him to embrace roles that endeared him to fans and garnered the admiration of his peers.
Despite the challenges he faced in later years, Gibb remained an inspiring figure, known for his warmth, positivity, and infectious enthusiasm. He leaves behind a legacy that extends beyond his performances; he will be remembered fondly by family, friends, and the countless fans who cherished his work.
Donald Gibb is survived by his loving family and an extensive community of supporters who celebrate his contributions to film and television. As we remember him, we honor not only his artistic achievements but also the joy he brought into the lives of many. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Gibb had a supporting role in the cult classic movie Bloodsport, providing comic relief to star Jean-Claude Van Damme. Here are a few clips of my favorite roles of his that he played over the years…
I forgot that he played this small role in the show Cheers. A very funny scene.
There were many great moments from Gibb in Revenge of The Nerds, but he’ll always be known for screaming “NERDS!”
And who could forget the belching contest?
And more “NERDS!”
And a clip from Bloodsport….
I found this compilation video of Gibb in various roles on television shows through the years…
RIP Ogre. I feel like my childhood is slowly dying off.
