Number eight on the list of top barbershop chorus contest performances of all time is The Vocal Majority from Dallas, Texas, at the International Barbershop Harmony Society convention in Las Vegas, Nevada on July 4, 2014.
The Vocal Majority won the contest, scoring 2,903 points, singing “You’ll Never Know (Just How Much I Miss You)” and “When Johnny Comes Marching Home.” The 2,903 points tied what the Ambassadors of Harmony scored in 2012, but they scored three more points in the music category. The music category score breaks ties in barbershop contests, so the Vocal Majority takes eighth place on the list.
Here is the performance of the ballad “You’ll Never Know.”
And here is the uptune, “When Johnny Comes Marching Home.”
Their highest score was in the presentation of this song. They scored 494 points out of 500 possible in the Presentation category, meaning that likely four judges gave them 99 out of 100 and the other gave them a 98. The reveal of the soldier during the tag of the song is the highlight of the performance for me.
